With makeup artists offering sweet deals for Carnival, female masqueraders (and some males too) are pushing the envelope when it comes to putting their best faces forward for the two day festival. Carnival makeup, in case you have been living in a cave for the last few years or so, has evolved from the simple (eyeliner and eye shadow) to the dramatic (airbrush, wide fake lashes and all). For 2012 over the top and elaborate seems to be what’s trending. Here’s what the MUAS we consulted had to say.

“Rhinestones, lashes and painted/airbrushed designs are all especially popular this year. I cannot say that any particular colour stands out but women want a look that enhances their costumes. Lipstick isn’t really favoured as masqueraders are constantly sipping on something.
But I have always wanted to find a client who would let me use unorthodox colours on her lips. The eyes are really what women want to accentuate, that’s why fake lashes are such a HUGE hit. I have a few clients from abroad and they seem to be a little more adventurous than local women when it comes to coloured lashes. I suspect that more women would get into it as the need to be more extravagant increases.”

“This year I am offering a special group rate for groups larger than three persons and I also make house calls on the Carnival days starting from 4 am! Although I do makeup for weddings, graduations, awards, photoshoots and basically any and every event, I always look forward to doing makeup for Carnival – that’s what gets my creative juices flowing and where I can take things to another level.” (Find them on Facebook)

“The more the glitter, the better. My clients want bright and vibrant colours that almost compete with their elaborate costuming. Eyeliner is one makeup staple that I believe will never go away. Even the most shy or non-makeup wearing person loves eyeliner. Water resistant eye liner is a Carnival must have. Over the last four years, I have definitely seen an increase in the use of fake eyelashes. Lovely and elaborate lashes full of colour. Gems and glitter definitely add certain flair to the whole ensemble.

Gems are definitely trending and have been for a while as a Carnival makeup accent. In fact, I would go as far as saying gems are actually taking the place of makeup, with varying colours over the lids to give the effect of eye shadow but with a hit of glamour. Women want their makeup to be a part of their costume and gems help build the bridge between the two.
For the season I've also noticed the trend of adding cosmetic glitter over matte eye shadows, creating a dramatic foundation onto which glitter is applied.
On the road, there will be a lot of drinking, if one is planning to wear a lip colour it should be something long-lasting and natural looking. I always advise my clients to allow their dramatic eyes to take centre stage. It may Carnival but you still have to find a balance in your makeup. Walk with a natural toned lip gloss for quick touch ups.
False lashes are becoming even more popular and there are so many styles to choose from now. My personal favourites are lashes with feathers only on the outer corners of the eye. I think they play off the eye makeup very well without over powering the look.”
