At the NFL Draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, the Carolina Panthers selected quarterback Cam Newton of Auburn as the first overall pick. A lot of big name draft picks have fizzled fast in the NFL's meat grinder, but so far Cam has earned every nickel of his $22m contract. After breaking the NFL rookie opening day passing record, Cam threw another air assault the following weekend and by week three he had tallied more passing yards than many seasoned QBs put up for a season.
After those opening weeks, however, Cam took it down and actually started winning, and to date has top-ten stats in both total passing yards and yards per game—but is also tied for third in interceptions, which is bringing his total rating down. Barring injury, which can come at any time for the gonzo player who also has the all-time record for rushing touchdowns by a QB, Cam is gonna be on a game-breaker for a long time coming.
